Socks! Every runner needs new socks, you can never have enough. My favorite running sock, Feetures!, has now combined Merino wool into it’s design. Wool can be worn year round and the extra cushioning that these socks provide in the right places make for a great combo.
Subscription for you and a friend at UltraRunning Magazine. Here’s how it works… Sign up for a subscription for yourself and then you can gift a subscription for someone else for only $9.99. You don’t need to be an ultra runner to enjoy this magazine. It’s the gold standard in ultrarunning and has been in print for over 35 years. The articles are well thought out and inspiring for any distance runner.
Pull Up Bar. Most runners tend to forget that they need to incorporate upper body exercises into their routine. Pull Ups provide a great workout for your back and arms. If you have the space in your garage I recommend some like the Ultimate Body Press Ceiling Mounted Pull Up Bar. I’ve used the doorway type pull up bar for the past few years and it’s beginning to wear down the molding in my doorway, so for this reason I don’t recommend this kind anymore.
Traction spikes for the snow and ice. I’ve recommended these for a few years but every year I still get asked about wht I use to run with when there is snow and ice on the ground. So far after 3 winters with these I can still highly recommend Due North Everyday G3 Ice and Snow Traction Aid. They are extremely easy to use and they don’t affect my running form like a lot of other bulky traction devices would.
Last but not least, I think a great gift to any runner would be to offer to pay for a race entry in 2017. Race fees can add up and sometimes races are missed simply because a fee is so costly. Even if it’s just a partial payment of a race entry it will provide great support and motivation to that runner. For me, racing is a form of motivation in my training routine. If I have something to train for I am more likely to push harder during workouts and stay on track even when I’m feeling the lazy bug creep in. Make a card and write out this gift, unless you already know of a race they wish to sign up for.
