Today I had a chance to try a pair of Topo Athletic MT shoes for a 3 mile run. Topo is the brand of shoe that you usually associate with the single split toe but now they are making a normal toe box that all your socks will happily fit into.
My initial thoughts were that they are so comfortable! Compared to my New Balance Minimus road shoes (pictured below with my doggy Malua) they felt so soft. Not just a little more cushion on the bottom, but the actual shoe that wrapped around my feet felt almost like a slipper but without all the fuzz. Plus the extra few mm of cushion on the sole didn’t feel too bulky. Oh! And one last thing. They are extremely lightweight. Kind of like walking on air. The heel to toe 2mm drop is also very similar to my current shoe.
This made me feel optimistic. My last pair of shoes that I demoed were sort of a let down. Check out my Hoka One One Conquest review to read about it.
So a simple 3 mile course was laid out and the running began. It was 95% on the road so I didn’t really get too much of a feel for how they grip on trails, but I hopped on the grass and a little gravel when I could and it seemed sufficient.
About 400m into the run I did start to feel a little pain on the inside of my knees. This went away towards the end of the run but it is something I don’t get with my current NB shoes. I think that a few more runs would have gotten my legs used to the shoes and not given me the knee pain, but there’s no guarantee in that.
I do love the color!
I tried to run at a pretty quick pace to see if they felt responsive to the ground. Since I am used to minimal cushion it always makes me feel like I have a little drag when there is more cushion on the sole. But these shoes felt light and firm enough to keep my legs going. Pretty much the only things holding me back were my lungs, not the shoes. I could race in these.
Overall, I like them. Will I buy them tomorrow? Not just yet. But I would put them on my wish list. They are also a very comfortable shoe just for walking around. They fit like a glove, a warm and fuzzy kind of glove. 😉
Check them out at your local running store. They retail for about $90-$100.
